Sony announced a smaller PlayStation 5 design in October 2023 and began rolling it out in the United States in November of that year before expanding to other regions. Players commonly call it the “PS5 Slim,” although Sony positioned it as the new standard PS5 design rather than a separate performance tier.
The update replaced the original launch chassis over time. It came in two familiar forms: a model with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and a Digital Edition. The important difference was that the new Digital Edition could later accept Sony's detachable disc drive, giving owners a path to physical games that the original Digital Edition did not have.
This was a hardware refresh, not a PS5 Pro-style performance upgrade. Games, accessories, system software, and the core experience remained part of the same PS5 platform. The main reasons to choose it were the reduced size, lower weight, extra internal storage, and modular drive option.
1. Release date and slimmer design
The revised console is more than 30 percent smaller by volume than the original model. Sony also reduced weight: the new disc version was about 18 percent lighter and the new Digital Edition about 24 percent lighter than their launch-era equivalents. It is still a substantial console, but it fits more comfortably into many media units.
Four separate cover panels replace the original pair of large side plates. The upper sections have a glossy finish and the lower sections are matte, creating a visible seam around the middle. This construction also supports the removable drive and makes the revised machine easy to distinguish from the 2020 chassis.
“Slim” describes the case, not a faster graphics mode. A game should perform the same way on the standard launch PS5 and the smaller standard PS5 when both use the same software settings.
The console can sit horizontally with the included small feet. A circular vertical stand is compatible with the new design but is sold separately, so buyers planning an upright setup should include that cost.
The smaller design is easier to place, but it still needs ventilation. Do not pack it tightly against the back of a cabinet or cover the intake and exhaust areas. Leave room for cables, allow warm air to escape, and keep dust under control around the vents.
The front connection layout was also revised, with USB-C ports taking a more prominent role. Existing TVs, HDMI cables, headsets, storage devices, and most licensed PS5 accessories continue to work in the normal way. The DualSense controller and games were not redesigned around the slimmer chassis.
Noise and heat can vary with room temperature, dust, and the particular game. The refresh is not marketed as a silent edition. Good placement matters more than assuming a smaller enclosure will automatically run quieter.
2. Disc drive, storage, and performance
Both refreshed models include a 1TB internal SSD, an increase over the 825GB drive in the original launch console. Some space is reserved for system software, but the larger capacity still gives users more practical room for modern games before an expansion drive becomes necessary.
The internal M.2 expansion slot remains the best long-term storage option for users with a large library. A compatible PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD must meet Sony's size, performance, and heatsink requirements. USB storage can archive PS5 games and run supported PS4 titles, but PS5 games must be copied back to suitable internal storage before play.
Core performance is unchanged. The CPU and GPU target the same PS5 game specifications, and the console supports the same features such as fast loading, 4K output, high-frame-rate modes in supported games, ray tracing, HDR, and 3D audio. Results still depend on the game and the connected display.
The detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray drive is the most meaningful structural change. It can be added to the revised Digital Edition, giving owners access to disc-based PS5 and supported PS4 games as well as compatible movies. The drive requires an internet connection during its initial pairing with the console.
That flexibility is useful for households that begin with downloads but later want to borrow, trade, or buy discounted physical games. It also means a damaged drive can be treated as a module rather than the identity of the whole console.
However, the add-on drive and replacement cover should be bought from an authorized source, and regional pricing can make a Digital Edition plus drive more expensive than buying the disc model from the start. If physical media is already part of your plan, compare the total cost before choosing.
3. Which PS5 version should you buy?
Choose the disc model if you already own physical PlayStation games, buy used titles, share discs within a household, or watch Ultra HD Blu-ray movies. Choose the Digital Edition if you are committed to downloads, have reliable broadband, and prefer a cleaner front profile.
- New buyer: select by media format and total price; game performance is the same.
- Original PS5 owner: the smaller size alone rarely justifies replacing a working console.
- Original Digital Edition owner: the old chassis cannot accept the new detachable drive.
- Small cabinet: measure depth and allow ventilation rather than relying on the word “slim.”
Also compare bundles. A package with a game, second controller, or store credit may be better value than the cheapest bare console.
The 2023 PS5 refresh is best understood as a more practical version of the standard console. It is smaller, lighter, includes 1TB of storage, and gives Digital Edition buyers a modular route to physical media. It does not deliver higher frame rates or a new game library.
For most first-time PS5 buyers, that is enough: the design is easier to accommodate and the platform has a mature catalog. Existing owners should upgrade only when size, storage, or a replacement need matters. Anyone seeking a measurable graphics upgrade should compare a different performance class rather than expecting it from the Slim.
